Different Cultures Provoke Thought
I grew up in an all white neightborhood, I attended an all white highschool, and until I took history my junior year, I could have cared less about cultural struggle. The collection of stories that was assigned from the workbook, paints a beautiful picture of minority stuggle, and the real life pain and stereotyping that these individuals had to endure on a daily basis.
I learned from the Asian American writer that Princeton University did not start admitting women until the sixties. That came as a shock to me, and when the writer revealed that she was one of four Asian American women while she atteneded Princeton, I felt a cold chill run down my spine. Only FOUR Asian american women, and this strong women telling the story, was on of those four. I felt a sense of pride for the narrator, and was so proud that she rebelled against Asian traditions and went somewhere with her intellegence. The second thing that I found shocking was the Latin American father who was describing his son. He wanted so badly for him to have a normal life, without being stereotyped everyday. He mentioned at one point that just because he was Latin American, he was automatically assumed to be in a gang. This is so unfortunate that these minorities have and had to struggle with this each and everyday.
