A Different Perspective
Having grown up a middle class, caucation male in a predominantly white, rural town it is extremely mind opening to read the work of people of different races. Reading these essays has given me a better understanding of how different people from different races view society, and how they interpret how others see them. The readings also made me look at my own views on race in our society today, and how many races can be and have been portrayed very poorly and inacurately in the media. There is no arguing that in my younger years I probably had a very different view of people of different races based on what I learned from people around me, mostly caucation, and from the images that were shown by the media. That is why these readings all very relevant today to society. They help to better understand not only different races but society as a whole because society is made up of different races. All the authors of these essays have lived different lives with different struggles, and it is important to learn about them through their interpretations because they know better than I do. In order to understand race in our society, one should view it in a different perspective; the perspective of someone who knows better, someone who has lived with that perspective.
