Harsh Realities
Throughout reading all of these short stories, I have been able to learn a little something from each. In this set of stories, I became aware the term "J.A.P.", I had previously never heard this term used, except for in a derogatory sense towards the japanese. I had no idea that this term was also linked to the Jewish people. I didn't know that Jewish people were known for being wealthy. I also found, as in other cultures there is discrimination towards their own. I thought the story about transgender was the most interesting. All of the statics that were given were unbelievable, I had no idea. It amazes me that someone in a professional job, wasn't able to help someone just because of the sexual orientation. That just comes to show how closed minded this world is. We live in America where supposedly everyone is welcome. I understand then how some many people can feel out of place, and shunned from society. People need to open there minds and accept people for who they are, no matter if that means they aren't the same as them. This world would be so boring if everyone was the same. We should be grateful for the diversity that we live. And take the opportunity that is right in front of our faces to get to know someone or another culture. I may be the only to feel this way, but I grew up in a very diverse culture, where I was taught to learn from other peoples differences. I did not have to necessarily agree with them, but come to an understanding and accept that as who they were. These stories are just such eye openers to the harsh realities of the world we live in.
These stories had had many logos, with all the statistics that were given. These allowed me to get a better understanding of the realities of transgenders, specifically. These stories appeal to the pathos, because you are able to put yourself in the writers position. Especially, with the Jewish girl, she was stereotypically labeled just because of the way she was born. This happens to many of us, all the time, we understand how she feels.
