It is very important to read about different races and their cultures. We are all able to live together with more ease if we understand and know more about the people around us. The stories we read involved races we are unaccustomed to hearing about. I think it was good to hear about these different concerns from the people themselves. It helps to understand better by trying on someone else’s shoes.

I learned something different from all of these stories. Each one expressed concerns dealing with a different race. As I live in a small, primarily white town, I did not realize how many different people felt their race was being mistreated. I know prejudice is still a problem with some, but I had no idea how upset some people living in the United States are. The story that caught my attention the most was the story about the struggles that American Indian women face today. I did not know the American Indian women felt as if they were only surviving. It was surprising for me to read the statistics of the Indian people. For example, I did not realize that the average unemployment was 60 to 90 percent for the Indian population as a whole. This is a very startling percentage, and I can understand that this would be a concern for the Indian people, as one needs a job to survive. However, I was somewhat bothered by the very negative mood of this article. While I am sympathetic towards the Indian women, I feel like author of the story was constantly focusing on the negative aspects of her life. I do not think every Indian woman would feel that they are treated so unfairly. As I know things are far from prefect for Native American women, I think their lives have improved, and they have much to be thankful for.
