learning to read

The stories we read in class were certainly an eye-opener to how I have been reading stories. Not that what I have been doing is necessarily wrong, just naive or ignorant even. Growing up, my world has been based around white, american culture, as well as many other students. While reading these stories, I began to realize that I have not read many stories like these, simply because of my background and culture. When reading anything concerning other races, cultures, religions, sexualities...everything I take in is based on what I already know, which would be very little. These stories have taught me to have a more open mind about things that I'm reading and taking into consideration everyone involved, not just those similar to me.
