Racial Problems

In reading about all the different cultures and ethnicities, such as the Chinese, Puerto Rican, and American Indian, I learned a great deal about what they all have to go through in terms of dealing with other races and even within their own race. Being a caucasion person, I don't really ever think about the sterotypes that people have for my race. The only one that really ever comes to mind is that other ethnicities think we are rascist against them. Also their are stereotypes within our own race that we have, such as rednecks, white trash, rich and preppy, and so on. After reading this text though it makes me more aware of the fact that we associate people with bad things that someone in their race has done, even if they had nothing to it. An example is the American Asian girl who when soldiers saw her made a comment about how “they are everywhere”. They were classifying her with the people in Vietnam, which she had nothing to do with at all. I couldn’t believe all of the problems that the different races have with each other such as rape, incest, sexual assault, battering, and health matters. It was interesting how the American Indian men were never violent but once they got that stereotype they became violent. I think we are reading this so we can become more aware of what is going on around us and not just in our small groups. Also to expand our English comprehension.
