Reading and Learning
I believe that we are reading these articles with the simple, yet difficult, purpose of educating ourselves in the field of rhetoric representing gender and race. Rhetoric defining different races and genders is a fact of our everyday lives. Problems between these groups may well no longer be as b latent as they once were, but that does not mean that they are gone. As such, it is important that we read about the marginalized groups in our world, what they have experienced, and how they have coped with or worked against it.
So far, I have learned a number of things from these readings. Firstly, I realized that gender and race are much bigger issues than I thought. In South America, society is extremely machista but, at the same time, does not deny women high order jobs. Race is not a big problem either. This is mostly because countries are not nearly as ethnically diverse as the USA. I also believe that things are a lot quieter down there for two reasons: 1. there are more urgent things to adress such as military unrest, political unrest, etcetera and 2. because latinos are quite simply laid back and not nearly as sociopolitically active as people are here.
I also learned that American Indians continue to be slowly opressed into extinction by the giant american corporate machine. ndians are a groop of separate beliefs... VERY separate beliefs. Because they did not, do not, and will not fit in to the grand scheme of the fully functioning capitalist machine, they are marginalized; left aside to fend for their own. I found the government's disregard for the way american indians have been, and continue to be treated as truly apalling. The presidency should turn its face home for a bit and see how screwed this place really is in certain ways.
