Reflections of Society
Over the past few days, I have been continually intrigued by many different stories that I have read. However, it was not until a few days ago when the subject became more real. The past few readings have not been stories so much as they are documentaries. While reading, I felt like I waws able to step into the shoes of some of the writers thanks to their brilliant use of rhetoric. I have learned a lot about the way society treats and influences people. In many of these readings, the people within the reading are forced by society to act the way that they are. In "Angry Women Are Building", the struggle of the Native American woman, it was mentioned that the native american males were kind, gentle, moral men. But it was society's portrayel of them which lead to the destructive behavior which many of them exhibited. The same goes for the reading "To Be Poor and Transgender." In this reading, the story of a person named "Lucky" says to herself that she doesn't think she is male nor female, she is not anything. The story of "Lucky" later shows that society's mocking of him/her had a part to play in her identity crisis. Both readings, in my opinion, show that society can be extremely cruel and untolerating of others. Society is evil. My newfound concept can be seen in "White Privelege and Male Privelege." As a white male, I can relate to how people in my position think and feel towards others. As I read off the list of what gives me "White Privelege", I could see exactly how society needs to be fixed. White privelege exists and it is not alright. No race should be given the most and have the least taken away. Being born gives a white male no right to have an unfair advantage over others. I have learned that if there is to be change, I am going to have to fight for it. Giving people a difficult time because they are born different is wrong, the same goes for giving people an easy time for being born to privelege. I hope that one day society will be indifferent to people of different creeds and races. One day, all people, people of different races, colors, and creeds will be on equal ground. The first step in implementing this change, is to admit something is wrong.
