Reflective Reading

The readings we have completed for class in these past weeks have brought quite a few issues to light for me. I had always believed that gender and race issues were completely subdued in the US after the sixties decade. I was evidently wrong. The articles expose a series of racial and gender struggles undertaken by all different groups of society. I find it hard to believe that in a modern world such as ours, the governmental system still fails to engage certain minority groups. It is as if we had never learned our lesson.
I was really shocked to read about the way the Native Americans are marginalized. It is well known that the US government spends millions of dollars a year in building support infrastructure for minorities such as African Americans and Asian Americans. Where is this kind of support for the natives? I mean they were here before any one else, including the white majority. Does that not entitle them to a little help at the very least?
I also learned that the US is truly a cultural melting pot. From my personal experience in South America, different groups, such as Chinese, Korean, etcetera, tend to stick together. They group together to the point of not even bothering to learn their host country’s language. Here, on the other hand, Second generation Asians no longer even speak their father tongue. The US merges all cultures into a big American conglomerate.
