Surviving Racial Discrimination - Survivor
Survivor's new stunt to divide the tribe by four different races is by no means a good idea. I think that many people are still going to watch the show and it will gain popularity. Survivor is about ratings, getting them, and making more money per commercial because of that. People like to see something new and something other people haven't done before. They embrace the division by race in hopes of just getting more money. For me however, division by race is only going to add on to discrimination by race. Whichever tribe does better, existing racial prejudice will only grow. I read on MSNBC.com that the reason that Survivor divided the tribes into members of different races was that many had "ethnic pride." To me, no race is any better or any worse than another. One people, one planet. Whichever tribe ultimately survives won't have anything to do with one race is being better than another but rather the skills of the individual people involved. Sadly, I am positive that many viewers will be tuning in in hopes of justifying their own racial prejudices. With the coming of the civil rights movement, a new age of understanding between people of different cultures and racial backgrounds came to an all-time high. However, the 21st century has birthed a new generation who reinforce separation and differentiation by race. I believe races are only different because society as a whole thinks that different races are different. Survivor may be about whoever wins at the end. But when participating in TV Show which supports racial conflict, nobody wins.
