A girl like me.
This story is about how African American women are supposed to present themselves in society. What is beautiful for an African American female? I think that being unhappy with the way you are is a plague that spreads not just to a certain race or group of people but to everyone in the nation. Part of this video covers how many African American women are doing things to whiten their skin, enough to become "light" complected. I think that race plays a part in what is seen to be beautiful. From birth, African American girls are bombarded by images of what is beautiful. Many instances this image is unrealistic, and it is no different for African American women than any other race. This video shows how girls are taking drastic measure to change their appearance with how society wants them to look. I think that Age plays a major part in how much this image can affect a person. For example, part of the video covers the choices made by African American children and their choice of which doll to play with; an African American doll, or a Caucasian doll. Fifteen of the twenty-one children chose the Caucasian doll because it is the "nice" doll and the African American doll is the "bad" doll. I think that this is one of the examples of how the media and advertisements are corrupting children by making them buy into an image of beauty. I thought that this was a very educational video into showing how an image of beauty is projected into the minds of African American children which forces them to take drastic measures to change their appearance.
