Halloween Costumes
Halloween used to be one of my favorite holidays because I was able to dress up as whomever I wanted and I got tons and tons of candy. Each year as I grew older Halloween started to fade and once I hit high school I went Halloween parties instead of trick or treating. Halloween is a great source of visual rhetoric because you decide what you want to be and this shows others your personality and who you are. During our class discussion on Monday I was surprised to hear that on of the spin instructor’s busiest times was Halloween. After going out and enjoying the festivities of last night I understand why this is. Many of the girls at the Halloween parties had very skimpy costumes on that seemed to only cover the correct parts. When comparing the boys costumes to girls costumes, boys will go for a more covering costume that can be offensive or way out there, while girls go for a scandalous look that sometimes does not represent who they truly are. It seems that a goal of Halloween is to find the costume that stands out the most and will gain attention easily. Halloween is a time for visual rhetoric because you meet all kinds of people when you go out and what you are wearing will show others what you think about yourself and what they should think about you. When you were little you did not have to worry about what you wore, because it was usually something cute and innocent; now Halloween is all scandalous costumes and attention.
