Halloween
Halloween is an instance of visual rhetoric as one can see how people present themselves through their costumes and actions. Kids dress up as a variety of things ranging from their favorite television character to princesses and knights. Generally, when kids dress up on Halloween they are simply representing something they like. However, as one gets older, the idea of Halloween begins to change drastically for them. Halloween becomes a time when girls dress as skimpy as they can, guys dress however they want, and then both male and female go out to party and drink. As I was noticing girls out walking around in their costumes last night, it was rare for me to see a girl dressed modestly, as most were trying to display a sexy image. I felt like they were trying to fit in by displaying their body as every other girl was. From observing costumes, the guys seemed to just have more fun with the day. They dress as anything and everything, some are dressed comically, others as a kid’s favorite movie character, and some dress in a way that might be found offensive. I saw two guys dressed as Scooby Doo walking on to campus making obscene gestures as girls walked by. They too seemed to be trying to fit in with the idea of sex appeal in Halloween, only by their actions instead of their costumes. Although, I think that genders dress differently at Halloween, they both seem to have the same idea to party hard.
