Halloween
When you were little, Halloween used to be a time where you dressed up in a cute innocent costume, ran around to all the houses in your neighborhood, and tired to get more candy than all your friends. Then you would hurry home, dump your candy out on the floor, and stuff your face the rest of the night. This is not the case anymore. It seems now that Halloween is not about getting candy, but rather about making a statement using visual rhetoric. This year, being my first college Halloween, I defiantly noticed a big difference from Halloween back at home. Here girls try to make any costume look as revealing and promiscuous as possible. I went out to a costume party this past weekend and saw everything from a sluty nurse and skanky referee, to even a revealing Harry Potter. It is quite easy to tell that the only goal girls have on Halloween is to get attention from guys by using their sex appeal. On the other hand, boys seemed to be dressed in a very different manner. Most were wearing pimp costumes or other comical and creative outfits. Even though guys usually do not dress in such a revealing way as girls do, it is easy to see that they are using their sex appeal to also gain attention from girls. Halloween is most definitely a huge time for an argument of visual rhetoric. During this time girls and guys can walk around and let their costumes do the talking for them.
