Helena and A Girl Like Me

The first video I watched was “Helena”. It was about a girl’s mother, Helena, who was addicted to pain killers and died because of them. This story made me angry because the pain killers were prescribed to her, therefore why didn’t someone ask the doctors to stop prescribing them? It seemed as if Helena did not try to get help or that her family was really trying to help her. However, it was obvious her family loved and cared about her. Helena’s family kept describing her as friendly, caring, and unselfish. Therefore, it is sad that someone would hurt him or herself in such a way and hurt the other people in their lives that care about them. The daughter was in a bad position because she felt that her mother died thinking she did not love her. However, I feel that her mother dying has made her mature a lot more and realize that it is okay to not know how you feel about something and to even express how you feel.

The second video I watched was “A Girl Like Me”. This video touched me the most because I have been exposed to such stereotypes. In this video a young black lady describes what black women have to go through to make themselves “pretty” and acceptable to the outside world. She said they have standards to live up to. Such things as their hair has to straightened or permed and if your hair is naturally that way it is even better. She claimed that light skinned girls were claimed to be prettier by the world. I witnessed this in my high school; the black people want to be lighter and the white people want to be darker. Even in most music videos you see on MTV, most of the black women, are light skinned or mixed.

It broke my heart when she did an experiment with young black children where they had to pick between a black baby doll and a white baby doll. The majority of them picked the white baby doll. Then when asked which doll is the bad doll, they picked the black one and when asked why they said because the doll was black. I had no idea they would feel that way and it is horrible that they do.
