Journey into the Unknown/I Wish
I chose these two films because they were different from each other. The first deals with teenage struggles of pregnancy, emotions, and poverty. The second deals with the death of a very close family member and the confusing process of the illness. The first film was done by a girl who wanted answers about her own past and came to understand it better through the lives of her friends. This film shows how easy it is for young, naive girls to end up with a child of their own before they can even drive. The girls in the story all talked about how their relationships with their boyfriends changed once they become pregnant, almost as if it were their fault entirely. They also spoke of abortion and how they didn't agree with it, but the boyfriends just didn't want to deal with a baby, regardless of the fact that it's a human life. Although her sample of people was small, Lizbeth did learn more about what her mom went through with her teen pregnancies and has made a wise decision never to place herself in that position.
The second film was about an average girl, with an average, loving family and the tragic event that turned her entire workd upside down. At 11 years old, Peri had to deal with her father's leukemia. After four years of suffering, her father died creating a completely different world for her. Peri talks about how she and her brother were very young and weren't sure exactly what was going to happen. This film outlines just how difficult and life-shaking these events can be, and that they can happen to anyone. It also stresses the fact that even though someone you love is no longer here, it does not mean they are gone from our lives forever, and that memories live on.
