Reel Works

The first video I watched on Reel Works was called Journey To the Unknown. It was about a 16 year old girl in Mexico and her friend’s early pregnancies. The video starts out at this young girls’ coming out party that her family had for her. As this young girl narrates her movie, she focuses on how growing up for her and her friends have been very different; she has two friends who became pregnant at the very young age of 15. Both of them wanted to keep their babies, however one of the girls had a miscarriage due to a fight with her older brother. Both of these girls were interviewed to say that they did not believe in abortion. The narrator then goes on to talk about her life while she was growing up and how she did not have an active father figure in her life when she was young. She was born to a teen mother, and lived a very hard life as a result. This leads to her strong belief that she will never have a child in her teens. I thought this was a very good film, as it showed how mistakes that a teen might make, could lead to a very hard life on other people. It seemed to portray an accurate depiction of teen pregnancies.

The second short film I watched was I Wish. It was written about a very closely bonded family in which the father was diagnosed with cancer. This movie was written from the viewpoint of his daughter. She talked about how she wished her father could still be here for the important parts of her life. In fact, the movie focused on the whole family, interviewing her mother and brother and how much they also missed the father. This movie was presented well, and made me think about how much I would miss out on, if my father had died when I was so young. This film reminded me not to take anything for granted, and it helped to show me how much I appreciate my dad in my life.
