Reflection on Readings
In reading the assigned text I learned about a lot of things that had never before been in my world. I had never heard the term J.A.P. before without it referring to Japanese people. I had no idea about the stereotypes of Jewish women. The things I read about how people treated Jewish women on college campuses were unbelievably horrible. The transgender story was shocking. All the people in the story gave it real good ethos. I have a hard time feeling any sympathy for these people though. Unlike with the stories that deal with races they decided to change that they were and brought the criticism upon themselves. The logos in the story made it more interesting, like the statistics on how many didn’t finish high school, were unemployed, had no health insurance, being HIV positive, and have considered suicide. I had no idea about the serious risks people take in trying to transform herself into the “ideal” woman. I don’t really agree with the white privilege story. It has a lot of truths in it, but I don’t think white people have that much over the rest of the races. Maybe because I am white it’s hard for me to see things from another side, but I went to a high school that was very diverse. There were few racist people where I came from. The Black, Hispanic, Chinese, Asian, etc. all got the same opportunities as the White kids did. I could even argue that got more. There are scholarships that are given only to those of a different race than white. There still is racism and stereotypes and there always will be, but why focus on the bad when there is so much good happening too.
