The History Channel

I went home last Friday and decided to watch my hour of television at home with my brother. He loves to watch the History channel and I really don’t, but we were supposed to watch a channel we usually don’t watch. As I sat through a long show called, “Modern Marvels,” I learned about the world’s largest engine in a boat that was the size of a regular house. Besides that I learned the target age of their audience by staying in the room during the commercials and paying close attention. Of course the History Channel is not directed toward women. Not may women usually watch the channel because many of their programs are about the past wars and technology, and most women are not as interested in that as they would be about Desperate Housewives or Grey’s Anatomy. I estimated that their target audience was adult males age range of forty to sixty and maybe even older. Many of the commercials were about healthcare or tools. AARP had a few commercials about just regular insurance and health insurance. They had older adults in their commercials and they explained the benefits of AARP and all that AARP had done for them. Another commercial that I saw twice was the advertisement of motorized wheelchairs. Most of the commercials were about Medicare and diabetes as well. I did find it interesting to be watching TV not for the program, but for the commercials to see how they do decide whom their targeted audience is. I think the history channel is on target with men, but I do think that they underestimate how many younger men watch the show as well, especially high schoolers. They may need to add a little variety into their commercial choices, but over all I think the History Channel is on target with their geared audience.
