The many faces of myspace.com
Myspace.com, easily the largest and most widely used profile website on the internet, can be a fascinating, time-consuming means of entertainment. Each profile not only includes personal information about who the person is, where he or she is from, age, interests, but also photos, an option for different personalized backgrounds, and even an option for having a song. Needless to say, Myspace has several options for online representation and many people take great advantage of this.
The first profile I looked at had a plain white background, no song, and little information about the person. There were pictures, mostly of the person with his friends and short descriptions about each photo. The wall, where people can leave messages was full of messages from friends.
The second profile I looked at was a friend of the first's. Her profile back ground was black, but with girly accents. She had a lot of information posted about herself: quizzes, outlines, surveys. The song playing was girl rock, and the pictures showed her snowboarding, camping, playing sports, and with friends. Her profile says to me that she is a girl and enjoys being a girl, but is not afraid to be a little dangerous. She also had her page pasted with pictures of her and her family, which says she cares a lot about them and is not afriad to show it.
The third profile was very artistic. This girl was a photographer and had her page covered in photos of her friends that she had taken and edited. She had links to her other website as well that was entirely devoted to photography. Her song was an indie-rock/alternative song that went well with her artistic theme. The photos she had posted on her page were of her and friends and of all the great times they were having! Her profile information stated what her plans were for the future and what her interests were now.
I viewed a few more profiles, and after looking at more I decided that these pages are visual representations of the people who design them. The first, which was plain and basic and to the point, was a representation of the person. He just wanted to put what he was comfortable showing out there. I doubt he would enjoy primping his page to make it more aesthetically pleasing. The second two were more aesthetically pleasing and appealing to the eyes. They make viewers want to read more into it. Myspace ahs a lot of options, and you can make your page anyway you like.
