Myspace Mania!
Browsing through myspace profiles, it is apparant to me that gender plays an important role in how people present themselves. While scanning through my potential candidates for male and female representation I noticed immediately a large difference in just the pictures. MEN DON'T SMILE!!! This isn't true for all men but for well over 1/2 of all the men aren't smiling. To me this is a representation of how society influence men to be emotionally detached. Instead of a smile, many men have a picture of them flexing with their shirts off. How cute! How comical is that, men are intentionally following the same pattern of trying to be the toughest guy on myspace. I don't know about you, but the average guy I know is not by any means "tough", but are instead fun and ready to have a good time. I can only draw one conclusion from this, they are lying! Women, however, are much more festive when decorating myspace pages. Instead of a big picture of a car in the backgroun, like many men do, women have the pretty colors: pink, light pink, dark pink, hot pink, and all the variations thereof. Ooh, and don't forget the flowers that come almost standard for the wonderful women of myspace. Also, women are smiling! They are having a great time. They aren't afraid of showing that they are having a great time either. Their myspace pages stand out while a the myspace page of a man is typically very plain with just the car as a decoration. All around, men are doing their best to present themselves exactly like what a man is supposed to act like and think about. Women, are also trying to represent themselves in the same way such that they look the most like society's stereotypical woman. By creating a webpage, people are in essence presenting themselves to society in an attempt to be accepted. There are the black sheep out there that go against this flow but like I said, over half the men don't smile. Is this not the most comical presentation of how society works? Each gender is desperately trying to make themselves the most manly or the most womanly, to this I say, I am a black sheep.
