Disney characters

Although I have only watched a couple of Disney movies, and I have not watched any for a more than 10 years, I can see a change in females characters simply by looking at pictures. When first obverving females in movies such as Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella I saw very conservative styles of dress. This was very consistent with the styles at the time, and definatly was appropriate for the viewing age group. After taking a glimpse at some of the newer movies, such as Aladdin and Hercules, they proved to differ significantly.

The females in older Disney movies had conservative dress and submissive behavior. Snow White had full length skirts and long sleeve shirts, and Cinderella wore similar clothing. Also, when examing the type of behavior exhibited by these characters, it is easy to identify that these characters were not assertive and independant. In Cinderella, the submissive behavior was seen to an extent that she had become almost a slave in her own home.

The females in current Disney movies show a significantly different style and behavior. For instance, in Aladdin Jasmine wore a much more revealing outfit consisting of revealed shoulders, upper back, and upper chest. She also showed a great deal of more independance. In Hercules, the leading female actor also displayed a more liberal attitude and tight fitting clothing. These differences may not be appropriate for the young viewing audience. Unfavorable differences were seen in the new movies.

Significant differences can be seen in the females behavior and appearance in Disney movies. While the old showed conservative dress and behavior, the new movied exhibited liberal behavior.
