Simpsons/ Lord of the Flies

The episode of “The Simpsons” we watched today was almost identical to the main idea of Lord of the Flies. The first thing that occurs once the children make it safely to the island is scapegoating. Lisa is accused first because she started the Model U.N. Club, then she puts the blame on Milhouse and so on until all the children are arguing. In the midst of the arguing Bart blows the conch shell and everyone listens to him. Bart is playing Ralph’s character in this cartoon and he tries to organize everyone to gather food and build shelters. During the court scene you figure out who the other characters are easily. Lisa represents Simon because she is sticking up for Milhouse and protects him. Milhouse is piggy because he not only has glasses, but he is one of the smarter children on the island and is immediately segregated as the scapegoat. Nelson who not only took Milhouse’s glasses and scraped them up while making a fire, but also beat Milhouse up for thinking he had eaten all the food, plays Jack Merridew’s character. Of course they chase Milhouse, Bart, and Lisa across the island and are ready to kill them when they realize that a wild boar ate all their food. Immediately they come to their senses and Nelson apologizes to Milhouse for the attack. They kill the boar and roast it and unlike Lord of the Flies, the children learn to manage and maintain a civilized community.
