Simpsonal Allusion

I have seen this episode of the Simpsons so many times, i could have recited the entire thing by heart. Because of this repetitive viewing, while I was reading Lord of the Flies, I couldn't help but think about this episode every now and then. Within the episode, obviously they use the overall concept of Lord of the Flies to construct this episode, but with their own "Simpsons" take on it. In the show, most of the main characters from the book were represented in each of the characters on the show. The first and most obvious was Millhouse. Millhouse was the one with the asthma, glasses, and overall the puny one. Millhouse took on the role that Piggy had in the book. Even though there was no food to be stolen in the book, this was how they represented Piggy/Millhouse becoming the scapegoat in the story. Lisa, although she is a girl, took on Ralph's part. She instigates the importance of rules and tries to regain order among everyone. She and Millhouse stick together and she sticks up for Millhouse in their trial. Nelson takes on Jack's role in the end. He picks on Millhouse, steals his glasses, turns the tribe against Lisa and Millhouse, and instigates the hunt against them and Bart. Bart was a little more difficult to pinpoint, but if any, I'd say he took on Simon's role because he stuck with Lisa (Ralph) and Millhouse (Piggy). There was even a set of twins on the island, although they did not particularly play the exact roles as Sam and Eric. In the book there are no females on the island with them, but in the show version there were. Even though there were girls, the writers did not have a problem filling those characters with female parts, like Lisa as Ralph. The TV version was obviously not as serious. They made a joke out of a classic story and made it suitable for the show's overall characteristics. No one died in this version and in the end they feasted on the real "monster" and everyone was happy. James Earl Jones even comes in and gives an ending explanation as to how the children were rescued..."by Moe."
