The Cosmo Image

I have never subscribed to the Cosmo magazine, so the only times I have looked at them were with friends or bored in a waiting room. However, these few times in addition to the website browsing I did last night are enough to give me a good idea of what this magazine is about. Its primary concern is sex. It is all about ways to be sexy, tests to see how sexy you are, the things men look for in women, ways to have better sex, and how to appear more like the beautiful model on the front cover. These magazines do not really do much for me except make me feel like I need to change my whole physical appearance in order to be successful with the men. I can not believe that girls younger than me, many times in their early teens, are reading these magazines. I had never really considered how easy they were to access for these girls, but after talking about it in class I realized what a major problem this was. Most parents let girls read these magazines, but if they do not the girl can easily pick one up and look through it while her parents are shopping throughout the rest of the store. Then we wonder why so many young girls have such a poor body image or are just concerned with getting and keeping a boyfriend. I think beauty magazines hold much more blame than a Barbie doll. These girls are much too young to be thinking about sex, and there they are poring over those magazines as if they hold the key to the world. I think this is serious problem, and it really concerns me as to what will come in future generations.
