Grey's Anatomy
This episode of Grey's Anatomy entailed a great deal of the information we discuss in class. First, the homosexual couple that joined the doctors on their camping trip showed how although the relationship consisted of two males, essentially the feelings felt between them were authentic and the same as a heterosexual relationship. The man who was turning into a woman emphasized that some people feel that they truly are a female in a males body, even to the point of dieing before living as a member of the wrong gender.
While taking time off of work to vacation, the doctors were all exposed to a homosexual couple. While in conversation, one of the men in the relationship expressed how special his partner was, and how difficult it would be to live life without him. Also, after his partner was injured accidentally, he expressed genuine concern for him that reminded us of a man protecting his wife. Although the experience ruined the maculine experience, the homosexual relationship emphasized how similar a homosexual and heterosexual relationship truly is.
The male becoming a female reminded us that some struggle with their gender identity for their entire lives and that although eccentric, transgenders are people with equal rights. The male in this episode felt for his entire life that he was a girl which led him to have a sex change operation. Before the operation he discovered that he had breast cancer and the operation would more than likely lead to his death. This man detested his male body so strongly that he wanted to have the surgery even with the added risk, which devastated his wife. In a discussion with his wife, the doctor gains insight into how even though her husband put her through this she still loves him and will be there for him the entire time.
This episode of Grey's Anatomy gives evidence of the similarities between homosexual and heterosexual relationships and reminds us that homosexuals and trandgenders are just as human as anyone else.
