Similarities
While watching “The Simpsons” in class today I immediately noticed a resemblance between that episode and The Lord of the Flies. There were so many things that reminded me of the book, some obvious and some I had to think more about. As in the book there was a group of kids stranded on an island with no adults, except this time there were girls on the island. Just like the kids from the text they at first thought being on the island would be like a vacation, but when they tried to look for food and build a shelter they noticed things were not going to be as easy as they thought. Immediately after arriving Bart, who symbolizes Ralph, took up the conch and tried to direct people as what to do. Millhouse with his glasses that started the fire, symbolized Piggy and how he got picked on and ridiculed. Arthur was the Jack of the story, when he told everyone to go hunt Millhouse, Bart, and Lisa because they thought Millhouse had ate all the food. I would have to say that Lisa reminded me of Simon because she was on Bart’s side. On the TV show they had a court meeting as opposed to the assemblies they had in the book. Arthur and his followers even had a three-phrase chant just like in the book. There was also a beast in the episode, but they also found out that it was not really a beast it was a wild boar, which they ended up cooking in the end. I thought this episode aligned with the book very well. It was almost unbelievable how similar they were.
